[Background] Not much is known about Kamui before his arrival to the Country of Tokyo. What is known is that Kamui and his twin brother, Subaru, are Vampires. The twins are purebloods and probably apart of the nobility in their world, due to their aristocratic attire. We are only given a hint of what Kamui’s society is like with his first encounter with Syaoran. Kamui noticed something about him and immediately asking Syaoran outright, whether he was prey? Apparently, Prey is a being that has a body but no soul. Prey is considered nourishment for vampires. It is speculated that the vampires in Kamui’s world had a system, in which they were able to preserved their existence and also prevent vampires from disturbing others with their bloodlust by using prey as their main food source.
Unfortunately, Kamui and his brother are forced to leave their world, when Subaru gave his blood to Seishiro, a vampire hunter. It is not clear why they must run from Seishiro, but either way. Since, Kamui probably saw Seishiro as a threat. So, Kamui and his brother turned to the dimensional time witch, Yuuko, to help them evade the Vampire Hunter. Yuuko grants them the power to travel to the different worlds. The vampire twins had successfully been able to avoid Seishiro by being on the move. However, their trip is placed to a stop, when they arrive in the world of Tokyo.
Three years prior to when Syaoran’s group arrive , Kamui and Subaru arrive in a devastated world, ruined by a continuous acid rain. The twins are standing by the Municipal Office Building’s reservoir, when Subaru is drawn in by an unknown power. He is enclosed inside a cocoon and placed into a coma. While he is still conscious, Subaru asks Kamui to wait for him until he wakes. Loyally, Kamui waited for his brother to wake up. In a means to protect his brother, Kamui takes it upon himself to guard the reservoir, one of the only two sources of uncontaminated water in that world. Being the strongest and having a strong desire to protect the water source, Kamui was seen as a leader to the people of the Municipal Building, even though he never considered himself as one.
The Municipal building’s rivals were the Tower group. The Tower also contained a source of uncontaminated water in Tokyo. Like the Municipal Building, they had to combat people attempting to steal their water from them. However, even if the two groups faced the same troubles, they also saw each other as enemies. Kamui was quick to realize that the leader of the Tower group, Fuuma, was the only other being in this world that could rival his strength. Often, Kamui and Fuuma would fight, usually because of Fuuma’s teasing, resulting in Kamui being so irritated with the other that the pureblood would resort to violence.
With the arrival of Syaoran’s group, things began to change. Syaoran and the others were not shown a hospitable welcome from Kamui’s group when they entered the Municipal Building for shelter from the acid rain. Thinking that they were trying to steal the water, like the many other thieves that litter the threshold of the Municipal building, they attacked Syaoran. Syaoran is able to dodge the barrage of arrows aimed at him, but he is hit by one, limiting his movements. Before Kamui’s finishing blow reached Syaoran, Kurogane stepped in. Kamui fought with Kurogane and after Kurogane managed to place a powerful blow on him; he lost interest in the fight (actually hiding the fact he was injured) and goes off to the reservoir. With this, Kamui’s comrades decided that it’s okay to let them go, since Kamui didn’t feel it was necessary to kill them.
Syaoran is given medical care for his injury and the guardians of the Municipal Building allow them to stay with them. In order to earn their keep, Syaoran, Fay and Mokona go hunting for sandworms. There Syaoran and the others realize how dire the situation is. Although, the sandworms were mutated beings, their poisonous bodies provided nourishment for the people of this world. After killing one sandworm, another erupted from the ground and attempted to attack the group. Syaoran stepped in using his Hien, to kill the worm. After this, the Tower group arrived with plans to hunt for food as well.
Kamui is not pleased to see him and when Fuuma teased him about his foul mood, Kamui reacted by attacking him. Showing how evenly matched he is with Kamui, Fuuma managed to grab a hold of his hand and confirm that Kamui must have be injured, because his movements were slower than usual. In response, Kamui flipped Fuuma, lifting the other off his feet. Soon after, the Tower group received a call that their base is being attacked and they retreated. After the threat of tower group is gone, Kamui’s suspicions of Syaoran arose again when Mokona sensed the presence of Sakura’s feather in the basement of the Municipal Building. Wary that Syaoran is truly a thief after the water, he directed his weapon in the other’s direction. It is then that, Syaoran explained that they are looking for something important and that it’s not the water. Kamui accepted the answer, since he didn’t show any further aggressions towards Syaoran.
As soon as they finished bringing back the worm to the Municipal Building, Kamui went straight to the reservoir. There he found something glowing in the water. Without hesitation, he jumps into the water and swam to the cocoon that his brother resided. There he saw Sakura, the sleeping girl that Syaoran and the others were traveling with, near the cocoon and taking in what seemed to be a feather. When this happened, the barrier that protected the Municipal Building from the acid rain disappeared. It seemed that feather was the power source that protected the building from the harsh conditions of that world. But Kamui is more concerned on why his brother hasn’t awakened up from the cocoon. He assumed that since the power that drew Subaru in was no longer there, his brother would finally wake up. But that doesn’t seem to be the case, for some reason his brother is still entrapped inside the cocoon.
He then wondered if Sakura has something to do with his brother’s prolonged sleep and goes to attack her, but before Kamui reached Princess, he is stopped by Syaoran. Kamui demanded that Syaoran move because he is in his way, since they cannot communicate underwater, Kamui does so telepathetically. This surprised Syaoran, who doesn’t know how to react to this revelation. Since Syaoran doesn’t respond to Kamui’s demands, Kamui continued his onslaught him. Syaoran is unable to defend himself, since movement underwater is difficult. When Syaoran is able to attack, Kamui recognized the technique as one of Seishirou’s, the hunter that is after him and his brother. He then decided to kill Syaoran because of his connection with Seishiro and also to use his blood to help wake his brother. While, Kamui is trying to feed the cocoon Syaoran’s blood, the seemingly dead Syaoran is revived. But Syaoran is different from before. He is able to move more easily underwater, even managing to land a hit on the pureblood. Kamui also noticed the difference between the Syaoran that arrive in Tokyo to this one, who could actually fight him on equal ground.
Outside of the water, the guardians of the Municipal building, Fai and Mokona wait. After a while, Fai can’t sit still and jumped into the water. When he swam toward the cocoon, he witnessed Syaoran breaking Kamui’s arm. Kamui recovered, slashing at Syaoran. Placing distance between them, Kamui is able to regenerate his limbs and heal his wounds by calling the his lost blood to him. He is surprised that prey (referring to Syaoran) had such strengthed and wondered if this was Seishirou’s doing since, Subaru gave the hunter his blood. Fai defends Syaoran, telling Kamui that he is a good kid and only wants to search for Sakura’s feathers. Kamui then confronted Fai about his magical abilities and knowing about Syaoran’s soul belonging to another.
The clone Syaoran’s right eye seal began to break and Kamui and Fai are able to sense the arrival of the other Syaoran. Fai attempted to keep the seal from breaking by using his own magic, but he is unable to. Instead, the clone Syaoran sensed the source of Fai’s magical power is his eyes and proceed to gorge his left eye out in order to use it to search for Sakura’s feathers. Kurogane entered the reservoir with Sakura’s body, which disappeared as soon as they grew close to the water. When Mokona told Kurogane that Fai and Syaoran hadn’t come out of the water, the swordsman was prepared to jump in. However, the water cyclone that enclosed Kamui and the others inside, dispersed and revealed a horrifying scene, the clone Syaoran consuming Fai’s eye. The real Syaoran finally arrived in the reservior and attacked his other. The real Syaoran lost the fight between his clone and allowing the clone to go to the cocoon.
Wary of what the clone Syaoran would harm a defenseless Subaru, Kamui prepared himself to attack the clone, but he is stopped when heard his brother’s voice asking him to wait. The clone Syaoran cut into the cocoon and revealed that another of Sakura’s feathers was in the cocoon. The clone Syaoran gave Sakura her feather and moved on to the next world. This is when Subaru is finally able to awaken. Kamui is happy to see his brother, running up to embrace and also urging him that they should move on to the next world before Seishiro caught up to them. But Subaru asked Kamui to wait, not wanting to leave Tokyo in state it was.
There were two problems that need to be solved, saving Fai’s life and also filling the water in the reservoir. In order to solve both issues, they asked help from Yuuko. The price of saving Fai’s life was too high for Kurogane to pay, so Subaru stepped in, feeling responsible for the lost water in the reservoir. Subaru asks Yuuko to give him enough water to fill the reservoir and like any wish granted by the witch, compensation was required. Yuuko proposed that Kurogane take on Subaru’s wish and that by granting Subaru’s wish, Subaru could then grant Kurogane’s wish to save Fai. The price to save Fai was giving his vampiric blood, so that Fai could become a vampire. Instead of allowing his brother to go along with the wish, Kamui volunteered his own blood. However, since it was Kurogane’s will to save Fai and not Fai’s own choice, Kurogane had to take responsibility. By mixing his blood with Kamui’s, Kurogane was submitting himself to being Fai’s prey, the only person he will drink from. After Fai’s transformation, the Tower group comes to Municipal Building with a proposition.
The tower group is aware that the Municipal Building has lost their feather, so Fuuma presents them with another feather that is within a container. In exchange for the feather that will create a barrier over the Municipal Building, they must allow the people from the Tower to live there. Since Kamui wouldn’t be staying in Tokyo, he does not make this decision for the people of the Municipal Building. The people from the Municipal building decided that since Kamui is leaving, they would be no match for Fuuma and it would be wise to agree. However, Mokona argued that the feather belonged to Sakura and that they have worked really hard to collect them. It is at this time, Sakura spoke up and asked them to wait on their decision for the feather. Yuuko delivered the water to fill the reservoir and it then revealed that Fuuma is actually the younger brother of Seishiro and that he brought the container that contained Sakura’s feather from another world. Fuuma is also a dimensional traveler, but he travels to collect things. Unlike his brother, who travels through dimensions to find Subaru and Kamui.
After Sakura returned with the compensation from the water, she decided to leave her feather in the reservoir in Tokyo. After this everyone, Syaoran and his group, Fuuma, Kamui and his brother, departed from Tokyo and went on to their next worlds.
[Personality]
When we first meet Kamui, we see him as a leader. He is the person that guardians of the Municipal Building are boasting about and he is the one who makes the decision of who lives and dies. However, it is not until the following scenes that we see why Kamui is perceived as such an admirable person. The pureblood shows fearlessness when he fights Kurogane. He doesn’t back down with the ninja coaxes him into a fight. When he fights, he is confident and doesn’t hesitate. Even when the ninja manages to land a hit on him, he doesn’t show any weakness and even when his comrades are worried about him, he tells them not to get involved, ceasing their concern. Kamui then spares Syaoran and others from being killed, showing that he wasn’t cold-hearted as he was first perceived.
As we get more involved in the country of Tokyo we see more sides of the loner. Kamui has a one against the world mentality, where he can’t trust anyone and he can only rely on himself. It is notable that the people of the Municipal Building knew nothing about the pureblood. They didn’t have any idea that he was a vampire or even his true reason for guarding the reservoir. Nor does Kamui confide in them about his past and how he arrived in their world. This is no different from how he dealt with Fuuma and even Syaoran’s group. The pureblood doesn’t interact with anyone useless he has to, either by means of protecting the reservoir or handling a threat that has the intention of harming the reservoir.
It is through his devotion to his brother, Subaru, that we see a softer side to Kamui. Throughout Kamui’s time in Tokyo, his thoughts, concerns and motives are all for Subaru’s sake. The reason why Kamui is so protective of his brother could stem from Kamui’s relation to other Vampire protagonists in Vampire lore. Usually in vampire fiction, loneliness or seeking others like themselves is usually a conflict that most vampires face. In Kamui’s case, he also shares the burden of being a supernatural being and on top of that a purebred, whose blood, is sought after. The only comfort Kamui has in this world is his brother, who also carries this burden. Being separated from his brother causes Kamui to have to deal with this on his own, which the vampire doesn’t handle well at first. To Kamui, Subaru is the only person he can trust and rely on. It is because of this relationship that Kamui is overprotective of his brother. If anything should happen to Subaru, Kamui would not know what to do. The proof of this feeling of aloneness is how the Municipal Building’s guardians described Kamui as “a lost child”, describing how emotionally vulberable he was when he was separated from Subaru. To avoid losing Subaru, Kamui shows determination in preventing Seishiro from catching up to him and even more so, why he guards the reservoir so closely.
Though, Subaru brings out many admirable qualities in Kamui, he also brings out some unpleasant qualities as well. After he is separated from his brother, he goes on a rampage, killing anyone who dared to get closed to him. It is only when he finished getting out his frustration, that he able to calm down and think clearly. Also Kamui is also willing to do anything for the sake of his brother, even if that means murder. In order to lure his brother out of sleep, he uses Syaoran’s blood, even if that meant he would die.
Though separated from his brother, Kamui isn’t the type to sit around for someone to guide him, he does so on his own. He doesn’t wallow in despair, when he’s stuck in Tokyo and his brother is trapped in a cocoon. He actively does something about his situation. He decides to protect the reservoir and he also does what he can for the people of Municipal Building, because helping them meant keeping his brother safe. This places him in a position where he can protect his brother effectively. Kamui will do what he needs to do, especially if he’s motivated.
When it comes to his brother there is a thin line of what is unacceptable or wrong. But Kamui is not a moralistic creature. The vampire does not judge people by good or evil, only whether they are a threat or not. He has no problem with killing as long as there is a good reason for it. He doesn’t kill Syaoran and his group because he felt there was no need to kill. However, he has no problem attacking Sakura and Syaoran when they get too close to his brother’s cocoon.
When we are first introduced to Kamui, we see him as very level headed, until he accepts Kurogane’s challenge. Showing that he could be impulsive, underestimating an unknown opponent. We also see this when he deals with Fuuma, Kamui loses his cool and often resorts to violence to speak for him. Although, Kamui probably has an idea that Fuuma is trying to goad him, he still allows his anger to get the best of him.
Even though, he wouldn’t admit it, in his brother’s absence he was able to make connections with the people there, despite how distant he is. He was seen as an admirable leader to the people of the Municipal Building, a savior to probably Syaoran’s group for volunteering his blood in order to save Fai’s life, and also as someone fun to tease by Fuuma. And to his twin brother, he is someone he can rely on.
[Abilities] Kamui is a vampire, but unlike vampires in common myth, he is not immortal. The sun, holy water, garlic, silver or any other combative items used to fend off vampires will do nothing to him. Though, a stab through the heart or beheading would kill him. However, he does get a few perks such as:
• A longer life span
• Regeneration- he can heal wounds in a rapid rate…even broken bones
• Agility
• Super strength
• The power to lengthen and sharpen his nails to use as weapons
• Kamui is also shown to be able to breathe underwater.
• He can also read minds and send his thoughts to a person.
• He can sense magic
• He can manipulate blood
[Other important stuff] It’s worth mentioning that Kamui is actually an AU persona of CLAMP’s original work, X/1999.
[Sample post]
[First Person]
- What do you think of your home world? The place we can’t return yet.
- If you could go back home, would you? Why or why not? No. We have to keep moving.
- What were you doing before now? That has nothing to do with you.
- If someone provoked or attacked you, what would you do? I’ll kill them (If necessary).
- Someone is trying to rob you! What do you do? Kill them.
- Do you stand up against authority, go against all odds, and if you could, pierce the heavens with your fighting spirit? If not, would you if you could? I’ll do what I need to.
- Would you consider yourself a hero or a villain? Why? Neither is an option as well, but still tell why.
Neither. I do things my own way and for my own purposes. They’re not heroic or wicked. I don’t care if I get praised or bashed for my actions. It doesn’t matter to me.
- You are on the verge of death. You know there is no way to survive and there's no coming back. Choose any of the following to answer: What is your last wish? Your last regret? Last thoughts? How do you feel? Who is the last person you think of other than your killer?
My last wish is that the hunter is dead. My last regret is not being able to protect Subaru from that hunter. The last person I would think of would be Subaru.
- Murder. What is your opinion? He probably deserved it (thinking of Seishiro. But in the case of others) only if it’s necessary.
- You discover someone stalking you. Do you call the police or deal with it yourself? Deal with it myself.
- What is more important to you: having friends or living on your own? Why? Subaru. I must protect him.
- You just got a challenge to fight from one of the strongest gang leaders around. Do you accept or reject? Why? Unless, he’s a threat. It’s unnecessary.
- There is a cake in the rain. What do you do? Nothing.
- Would you consider yourself a well traveled person? If so, what are some of your favorite places? If not, would you want to travel or is there some place you want to go? The only place I need to be is wherever Subaru is.
- Do you prefer adventure or the peaceful life? I don’t want us to run forever.
- Do you prefer the city or living out in the country? Why? It doesn’t matter. We can’t stay in either place for too long.
- You're dirt poor and your family is starving. You have a chance to steal bread. Do you: a) ignore it and get a job, b) steal it anyway because you know you won't get caught, c) get caught but break out of prison anyway, d) steal it and then hide from the creepy cop that keeps stalking you, e) don't steal because stealing is wrong :(.
B. If it’s for Subaru, I’ll do anything. Plus, they wouldn’t be able to catch me.
[Third Person]
There was nothing at the Sinkhole. Not a clue in the desert. And nothing turned up at ruins on the floating mountain. Kamui had searched everywhere for exits from Somarium, but none have turned up. The people here had told him that, but he wouldn’t listen. He had to make sure for himself. Once he searched this place himself, then he would accept that truth. And he wouldn’t stop until he searched everything in Somarium. Nothing can be overlooked.
“Subaru…” whispered to himself as he stood beside the teleportation pad by the lake. His blue eyes were soft and swirling with different emotions as the disappointment of coming up empty started to affect him. Suddenly, his dreamberry activated, waking the vampire out of his thoughts. Kamui pulled out the phone and without even looking at it, tossed the device into the water.
SPLASH!
The pureblood watched as his dreamberry was pulled underneath the surface, sinking to the bottom. He hated that thing. It was so noisy, announcing things he could care less about. And sometimes the device would come on its own showing the world, what he’s been up to. Today wasn’t the first time he’s abused his dreamberry. Just the other day, he left the dreamberry in the desert and on his first night here, he slammed the phone against the wall. His dreamberry had suffered a lot during his time here.
Yet, today was a different reason that his dreamberry had to suffer for his aggressions. The dreamberry acted as a constant reminder that his brother was not in this world. Every day, like he was addicted, he would look through the contact lists in hopes that his name would be on it. And then he would check again, hoping that the hunter’s name would be on there. Not that he wanted Seishirou here, but it would place his mind at ease. If the hunter was here, he wouldn’t worry so much. At least he knew that he wasn’t getting any closer to Subaru in his absence.
Kamui knew he couldn’t avoid the device; this severance from the irritating thing was temporary. He knew it would be back tomorrow, brand new and even more annoying…almost in a mocking way. The pureblood stood at the edge of lake and stared into it. This lake was reminiscent of his time in Tokyo, where he guarded his brother’s cocoon in the underground reservoir of the Municipal Building. At that time he felt similar feelings as how he feels now in Somarium; Impatience, panic, lost, sadness and regret.
The truth of the matter was that he felt as if he failed Subaru…again. First with Seishirou, then at the reservoir in Tokyo and now their separation now. Kamui could feel sorry for himself, but that wouldn’t help him. It wouldn’t help Subaru. He needed to be strong. Stay focused on his goal and not the struggle. Kamui’s blue eyes looked more determined than before after he reaffirmed his resolve.
The pureblood looked away from the lake and his eyes turned to the sky. Kamui made a promise, hoping that Subaru could hear it, wherever he may be. “Subaru. I will find a way to leave this world. I will find a way to get back to you. Wait for me…”
Kamui then turned away and began to walk back into town. There had to be some way to leave. And if there was, he’ll be the one to find it. Even if he had to turn this world upside down.
[Why do you want to play this character in Somarium?] I was blown away by a couple of RPers on LJ, who were able to create really good CR with characters I thought would be troublesome. One in particular impressed me so much that I wanted to app the same character they played. Also, Kamui is one of my favorite characters in the Clamp universe and I just thought it would be fun playing a grumpy vampire. There aren’t enough bloodsuckers here.
[Which rule was your favorite and why?] Well for this app I would have to say the allowance of cross canon characters, because if it wasn’t for this rule, I wouldn’t have the pleasure of apping Kamui. But on a serious note, being nice to other players is still number one.
[Where did you hear about Somarium?] Before I apped Schrodinger, I just found it by accident.
[Any questions?] Since there is no prey (soulless bodies) in Somarium, what would be allowed for Kamui to do about nourishment? Can he drink blood from NPCs or is there some kind of substitute for blood?
