Video 004 - Chicken Soup for the Soul

[Filtered away from Subaru Sumeragi:

Have an image of a large metal pot with the bottom burned through and slight blackened. And now have another image of a young man looking at said pot with disdain. Nearby is the charred remains of what looked like kitchen utensils and maybe a cookbook, which seems burned the most as if out of frustration the book was cast into the flames. But the kitchen in the background managed to look quite impeccable despite what was in front of him.]

...who knows how to make soup? Anything to help cure a cold? Also if anyone knows where medicine is available, I want that information too.

[Filtered to Serenity]...I owe you a pot, among other things.

[He tries to remember off the top of his head what he did to create a good udon for his captor.]

Flour, water, and salt for the noodles.

Then for the broth, soy sauce, water, uhm....mirin...katsuboshi,dashi and...something else. I can't remember exactly.

And we can add any vegetable, really.

Do you have a cookbook for Japanese dishes?

Action

[identity profile] seishiromustdie.livejournal.com 2011-11-14 06:46 am (UTC)(link)
Mirin? Katsuboshi? Dashi? [What are you saying Takuma? Even if Kamui looked Japanese and had a Japanese name, his world was far from it. Even when he was in Acid Tokyo, the Japanese civilization regressed so much that they were stuck eating the mutated fauna.

The vampire went looking for the other ingredients Takuma mentioned. Opening the cupboards was kind of like walking into uncharted territory.]

Japanese cookbook? Maybe Serenity has one.

[Maybe Udon was too much foreign verbage for Kamui at the moment.]

How about we just do a simple chicken soup? It can last a while and it's not hard. Hahaha...

We'll need onions, celery, carrots, and chicken.

Action

[identity profile] seishiromustdie.livejournal.com 2011-11-14 06:58 am (UTC)(link)
As long as it works. [But hey, the ingredients were more simpler so if he needed to make some more, he could.

The brunette managed to get the ingredients, finding them easily.]

...Now what?

Action

[identity profile] bound-canary.livejournal.com 2011-11-14 07:04 am (UTC)(link)
[He was already looking around for a pot, cutting board and knives.]

We fill the pot about a little less than two thirds of the pot and set that to boil.

Then we break down the chicken. We just cut it up and used the bones and such for the stock. Then we chop up the vegetables and use some for the stock and some for the actual soup!

That's what we should start on first.

[He twirls a knife over his hand, being skilled with blades.]

You cut the vegetables into large pieces and I'll break down the chicken!

So we're making the stock first, and that consists of parts of the chicken, including the bones and the vegetables. Got it.

[Taking up a knife,he starts to chop the vegetables. He knew he could that much.]

Action

[identity profile] bound-canary.livejournal.com 2011-11-15 02:25 am (UTC)(link)
[Takuma easily breaks down the chicken, sectioning off the parts of meat from the leg, breast, and thighs, pulling off the skin and separating the bones and any innards.]

Okay, you see all of these unwanted parts of the chicken? That all goes into the pot along with some of the vegetables that you cut up.

[He picks up his chicken bits and places them in the pot.]

Action

[identity profile] seishiromustdie.livejournal.com 2011-11-15 02:34 am (UTC)(link)
[Kamui takes note of the different parts. Especially the ones that would be used for the stock. Wow this was more to this soup thing than he thought.

He finishes off his vegetables, showing them to Takuma.]

Done. Do I just put them in the pot?

Action

[identity profile] bound-canary.livejournal.com 2011-11-15 02:58 am (UTC)(link)
[He nods]

Yes! Then we let it stew for a couple of hours on a lower heat so that all of the flavor can absorb into the water.

Action

[identity profile] seishiromustdie.livejournal.com 2011-11-15 03:08 am (UTC)(link)
[Places it in the pot. His eyebrow raising at how long it took.] A couple of hours? Why not just turn the heat higher so it'll be faster?

[And this is the trouble he ran in to earlier.]

Action

[identity profile] bound-canary.livejournal.com 2011-11-15 03:14 am (UTC)(link)
[He laughed lightly]

Because then the pot will boil over, the water will get all over the sides of the stove and burn. The taste of the broth will be bad and overcooked.

It's like tea.

If you steep a green tea at too high a heat, it will become brown and bitter tasting.

So you have to make sure the broth is cooking low and slow so that it gets the best taste and doesn't create a huge mess.

Action

[identity profile] seishiromustdie.livejournal.com 2011-11-15 03:23 am (UTC)(link)
...I see. [ He didn't think of that.Maybe one of Serenity's pots could have been spared if he would have known.]

So what's next?

Action

[identity profile] bound-canary.livejournal.com 2011-11-15 03:28 am (UTC)(link)
Well, we can salt and pepper the chicken and put it into the refrigerator until the broth is done. Then all we have left is straining the broth into another pot, throwing away the remains, then doing the final steps of the soup.

[He washes his hands first before touching anything else then gets out the salt and pepper.]

Action

[identity profile] seishiromustdie.livejournal.com 2011-11-15 03:56 am (UTC)(link)
Okay. [Washing his hands too. Nothing wrong with being cleanly.]
I didn't think cooking was so complicated.

Action

[identity profile] bound-canary.livejournal.com 2011-11-15 04:05 am (UTC)(link)
[He thinks about that for a moment.]

It is, but at the same time it's not too bad.

There are a lot of similar rules and it just takes practice.

It's when you get into gourmet cooking and the art of culinary techniques that it can get complicated. Like flavor profiles and different ways to cut things.

Baking is a chemistry all on its own.

But the basics aren't hard at all.

Action

[identity profile] seishiromustdie.livejournal.com 2011-11-15 05:06 am (UTC)(link)
I don't think I have the patience for it.

I just want it to be done fast. It's like a chore, not something you can involve yourself and have fun. I don't think cooking is my thing.

Action

[identity profile] bound-canary.livejournal.com 2011-11-15 05:33 am (UTC)(link)
[He laughs lightly]

Frying things is fast.

But it's not everyone's thing.

A long time ago, my close friend and I turned it into a competition!

Action

[identity profile] seishiromustdie.livejournal.com 2011-11-15 05:44 am (UTC)(link)
Frying? Fast? [ You may have pique his interest, Takuma.]

Action

[identity profile] bound-canary.livejournal.com 2011-11-15 05:46 am (UTC)(link)
There's stir-fry where you just cut up some vegetables, meat of your choice, some sauce, put it in a skillet and toss it until it's cooked and you're done!

Then of course deep-frying where you flour, panko, or bread crumb coat something, put it in some really hot oil and wait for it to become a golden brown and then you're finished!

Action

[identity profile] seishiromustdie.livejournal.com 2011-11-15 05:58 am (UTC)(link)
Those sound pretty easy. [Considering trying both when he's hungry and not feeling up to going outside.]

You'll have to show me how to make those another time.

Action

[identity profile] bound-canary.livejournal.com 2011-11-15 06:52 am (UTC)(link)
I definitely will! Those aren't hard at all!

[He waves him over.]

We should sit and chat while we wait.

Action

[identity profile] seishiromustdie.livejournal.com 2011-11-15 07:15 am (UTC)(link)
[Follows, it's better than standing around.]

Have you settled in yet?

Action

[identity profile] bound-canary.livejournal.com 2011-11-15 07:54 am (UTC)(link)
[He nodded]

I'm living with D again in our old house. I haven't found a place to work, yet, but I'm taking my time with that. It seems people are more in need of me at the moment.

Action

[identity profile] seishiromustdie.livejournal.com 2011-11-15 08:29 am (UTC)(link)
There's no need to rush.

[Kamui didn't ask the other about the who needed him and for what. It wasn't his business.]

I still have it, your sword. If you want it back you can have it. Especially that trunk of all those weird things.

Action

[identity profile] bound-canary.livejournal.com 2011-11-15 08:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Ah! Really?! You kept it all this time?

[He smiles brightly.]

Thank you, Kamui. That...that means a lot to me!

I'll relieve you of it. Somarium is pretty unpredictable. Who knows when I'll need to use it, right?
